일본인 유학생 미츠이 아이카, 한국에서의 4년 사진 여정을 마치다

우리학교 사진학과 졸업을 앞둔 일본 나고야 출신 유학생 미츠이 아이카양은 어린 시절 춤을 추며 자랐고, 중학생 때 한국의 ‘원밀리언 스튜디오’ 댄스 영상을 보고 한국에서 춤을 배우고 싶다는 꿈을 가지게 되었다. 

2020년 코로나로 모든 것이 멈춘 시기, 19세였던 그녀는 한국으로 건너와 부경대학교에서 1년간 한국어를 공부하며 한국 생활에 적응했고, 이후 우리학교 사진학과에 진학해 4년간 사진을 공부하며 졸업을 준비했다.

아이카는 꽃말을 주제로 한 인물 사진 작업을 특히 기억에 남는 작품으로 꼽았다. 3학년 기말 프로젝트에서 초콜릿 코스모스, 장미, 목화 등 다양한 꽃을 활용해 사랑, 아름다움, 풍요로움 등의 감정을 표현했다. 외국인으로서 의상, 메이크업, 모델 섭외 등 모든 과정을 혼자 진행해야 했기에 어려움이 많았지만, 자신이 표현하고자 하는 것을 자유롭게 촬영할 수 있었던 경험이 가장 인상 깊었다.

그녀는 한국 생활 동안 부산의 여유로운 환경을 즐겼으며, 처음 겪는 사투리와 거친 버스·택시 문화, 그리고 한국 젊은이들의 정치 참여 등에서 큰 인상을 받았다. “한국 사람들의 투표 모습을 보고 놀랐고, 일본에서 돌아왔을 때 저도 영향을 받아 투표를 했다”고 회상했다.

졸업 후 아이카는 오사카의 염색 관련 회사에서 일하게 되었으며, 회사 측은 그녀를 채용한 이유가 남들과 다른 경험과 삶을 살아왔기 때문이라고 전했다. 한국에서의 5년 경험을 돌아보며 그녀는 “한국에 잘 왔다. 정말 좋은 경험이었다”고 소감을 전했다. 

Japanese Student Aika Mitsui Completes Four-Year Photography Journey in Korea

Aika Mitsui, a Japanese student from Nagoya who is about to graduate from the Department of Photography at Kyungsung University, grew up dancing from a young age. In middle school, after watching dance videos from Korea’s “1MILLION Dance Studio,” she dreamed of learning dance in Korea.

In November 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 19-year-old moved to Korea and studied Korean for a year at Pukyong National University, adapting to life in the country. She later enrolled in Kyungsung University’s Department of Photography, where she spent four years studying photography and preparing for graduation.

Mitsui considers her portrait photography project based on the language of flowers as her most memorable work. For her third-year final project, she used various flowers such as chocolate cosmos, roses, and cotton to express emotions like love, beauty, and abundance. As a foreign student, she faced challenges managing costumes, makeup, and model coordination entirely on her own, but she said the freedom to capture her vision made the experience unforgettable.

During her time in Korea, she enjoyed the more relaxed environment of Busan and was impressed by local dialects, the often rough bus and taxi culture, and the active political participation of young Koreans. “I was surprised by how actively young people vote in Korea. It even influenced me to participate in elections when I returned to Japan,” she recalled.

After graduation, Mitsui will work at a dyeing-related company in Osaka. The company noted that they hired her because of her unique experiences and life perspective. Reflecting on her five years in Korea, she quietly said, “I’m glad I came to Korea. It was truly a wonderful experience.”
