Ethiopian Professor Reflects on Korean War Legacy
Israel Fiseha (38), a professor in the Department of Global Korean Studies at Kyungsung University, came to Korea in 2013 through a scholarship program for descendants of Korean War veterans, inspired by his grandfather, an Ethiopian soldier who fought in the war. Ethiopia was the only African country to participate, sending the elite Kagnew Battalion, which achieved notable results in battles including Hwacheon and Chuncheon.
Professor Fiseha recalled being deeply moved by the warm welcome he received in Korea, where locals often refused taxi fares or meals in recognition of Ethiopia’s contribution. He now guides Ethiopian veterans during commemorative events at the UN Memorial Cemetery in Busan and participates in programs that strengthen ties among students from Korean War–participating nations.
He expressed gratitude for the sacrifices of young soldiers, noting that their legacy allows him to live and study in Korea today.
